TAZ and Mu.ZEE together with many partners have put together the exhibition “The museum of the maddening beauty”. The starting point is to engage with creativity in as broad a sense as possible. What is our attitude to art? What is normal and what do we regard as an aberration?
“Art and mental illness are both concepts with very blurred contours”, writes Erik Thys, a psychiatrist, artist and musician.
“Het museum van de eigenzin” is not looking for common ground, but displays different and sometimes ‘disturbing’ approaches. Dirk Pauwels, as TAZ#2017 guest curator, provides a selection of artworks from the seventies made at the Caritas psychiatric hospital in Melle. KAOS, an art studio in Ixelles, works with artists with or without psychiatric disorders. Villa Voortman and Museum Dr. Guislain, both in Ghent, present yet another perspective. Peter Dufurne exhibits artists involved in the not-for-profit association WanderArt in Ostend and Mu.ZEE shows its own collection.
The title refers to the never realised Haus des Eigensinns, the ‘museum of maddening beauty’, in Berlin. Forget about insiders and outsiders. What if we develop a new language for every new encounter?
