Conversation Piece

Conversation Piece is an exhibition consisting of recent acquisitions and long-term loans by such artists as Jacqueline Mesmaeker, Sammy Baloji, Sven Augustijnen, Aglaia Konrad, Ana Torfs, Peter Downsbrough, Jan Vercruysse, Lili Dujourie, Lucy McKenzie, Valérie Mannaerts, Sylvie Eyberg, Philippe Van Snick, Guy Mees, Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Marc Nagtzaam, Nico Dockx, Benoit Platéus, Peter Wächtler, Manon de Boer en Nedjma Hadj, Jef Geys, Daan van Golden, Marcel Broodthaers, Jane Graverol and others.

Collection development is one of Mu.ZEE’s key tasks as a museum. The notions of “collecting” and “collector” widen the scope of the debate about a collection plan and art purchases.  Conversation Piece is about the generosity of the art proposition and an anthropology of the image, about dreams and myths as collective experiences. How do we gather data? How do connections and correspondences come about? When does a dialogue take place on several levels, involving multiple voices? The collector discovers and corresponds. Or as Hannah Arendt put it: “The world and the people who inhabit it do not coincide. The world is between people. This intermediate space – the political space – is our greatest concern today because it is subject to the most blatant desperation.” Possibly the museum is the place where a “fissure” may occur and where the world can once again become a subject of conversation.

“Ce qui change, c’est ce que nous voyons.” (Jacqueline Mesmaeker)
