Pieterjan Ginckels - 1000 Beats

Starting this year, Mu.ZEE will have a special project space on the ground floor of the museum for young art and artists. Belgian Pieterjan Ginckels (b. Tienen, 1982) launches the space with the work 1,000 Beats.
1,000 Beats is made up of some fifteen record players together with mixing decks, amplifiers and loudspeakers. Participation is central to the work and everybody who helps set it up receives free admission to Mu.ZEE for one year! Last year, 1,000 Beats was seen in numerous locations throughout Europe.

Each record player plays One Beat, a record that produces one sound per second, in a loop. The internationally known DJ Christian Vogel developed the sound and the record sleeve was designed by the Norwegian design collective Grandpeople. Pieterjan Ginckels considers the vinyl record to be sculpture, and music as a three-dimensional art form. This work expresses the artist’s desire to connect the art world with popular music. But it isn’t just about the music. He also wants to link the style of the labels, the concerts, the global exchange and the phenomenon of the fan club to the world of fine arts. He thus unites several social dimensions: pop music with fine arts and the local aspect of the installation in Mu.ZEE with the international dimension of a recording.
