Joe Scanlan - Part II Truffle Finds Pig

In Part I: Object Lesson, nineteen Nesting Bookcases (1990-present) – a new acquisition for the museum – will be on display in the museum lobby until 7 October. The Nesting Bookcase is Scanlan’s stamp on modern art: it is an object, a bookcase, which is interesting both to look at and to actually use. It comprises a rectangular compartment with four independent shelves, each one smaller than the next so that they can nest, or slide, into one another. If they are stacked, the strap acts as a structural tension belt to stabilise the whole construction. At Mu.ZEE the two main functions of the Nesting Bookcase – standing still or moving – mirror the two institutions involved in the exhibition – the museum and the city. The exhibition launches the production of the design; Mu.ZEE provided the stimulus behind this important democratic step.

During Part II: Truffle Finds Pig residents of Ostend will have the exclusive opportunity to borrow Nesting Bookcases from the museum and give them pride of place in their home or work place anywhere in the city. This can be arranged for a month, several months, or even for a year! The museum is literally going out into the world! Are you interested in discovering why you might want a Joe Scanlan artwork in your house? Find out more by reading the interviews that will be published in the local newspaper de Zeewacht.
