Trapped in the Dream of the Other is an exhibition centred around the 2017 video of the same name. The film captures a performance of the soil in which the artists set off fireworks in a coltan mine in the east of the DR Congo. The bespoke pyrotechnics were imported from the epicentre of China’s firework industry, thus reversing an existing trade route based on the exchange of minerals and gunpowder. The work negotiates distance and connection; between virtual and material, between systemic and personal, between colonial past and capitalist present. Other works in the show further explore a reality in which natural resources are being extracted in DR Congo in order to enact technological desires elsewhere, exploring how we are all connected in different ways to the ongoing exploitation of the region.
