Guided tour for blind and visually impaired visitors

Imagining Small Sculptures

What does an artwork look like when you cannot see it — or when you experience it differently?

In this tour, listening, touch and shared imagination take centre stage.

The exhibition Statuettes. Small Sculptures at Home is particularly suited to a sensory approach. Because of their small scale, tactile qualities and connection to everyday life, these sculptures invite an intimate and attentive encounter.

During the tour, guides take time to describe artworks carefully and clearly, placing them within their thematic and art historical context. Descriptions unfold layer by layer: shape, size, posture, material, surface and atmosphere. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, share associations and form their own mental images.

What can you expect?

Detailed verbal descriptions
The guide describes each artwork step by step, from the overall silhouette to the smallest details.
Tactile experience (where possible)
A selection of artworks or educational replicas may be gently touched, allowing visitors to experience volume, texture and weight.

A calm pace
The tour follows the rhythm of the group, with plenty of time to listen, feel and reflect.

Dialogue and imagination
Participants are invited to share their impressions: what does the artwork evoke? What emotions or memories arise?

Context and meaning
The sculptures are placed in their domestic context: where they were displayed, how they were used and why they mattered to their owners. Paintings and works on paper in the exhibition also help to illuminate this context.

What is central to the tour?

A sensory and tactile art experience
Trust in language, imagination and touch
Respect for individual perception
Art as a personal experience rather than a purely visual judgement

The tour is led by a trained museum guide attentive to the needs of everyone in the group.
