Luc Peire... this is not Permeke
From 13 June to 25 October 2026, the exhibition Luc Peire (1916–1994). Abstraction in Abundance will take place in Scharpoord and the Peiremuzee. The exhibition will offer a fresh perspective on the work of Luc Peire, who had his studio and home in Knokke-Heist — the site that now houses the Peiremuzee — and will highlight both his importance to Knokke-Heist and his international reach.
In the late 1950s, Peire settled in Paris, then the beating heart of contemporary art. In summer he always returned to Knokke-Heist, which at that time was also a lively biotope for modern and experimental art and architecture. Luc Peire (1916–1994). Abstraction in Abundance will trace Peire’s artistic development: from expressionist figuration to his signature vertical abstraction. This will be presented alongside remarkable works by the post-war Belgian avant-garde, featuring key pieces from the Mu.ZEE collection.
In the run-up to this exhibition, you can already discover an untold story: the connection between Luc Peire and Constant Permeke. Peire held deep admiration for Permeke, and in the 1930s, this grew into a special friendship.
That bond left clear marks on Peire’s work and guided his artistic search. In the 1940s, he developed his own distinctive style — but one element remained constant: a strong sense of humanism that connected both artists.
