Nein – Twelve in a dozen
The back of a painting: it appeals to the imagination and has enormous art historical value.
Arts platform Nein has selected twelve exceptional works from the Mu.ZEE collection on the basis of their backs. Notes, signatures, tests, labels and modifications due to conservation techniques tell us more about the history of the work and the artist’s way of working. But who authors the back of the painting? It looks like a collaboration between the artist and everyone who ever changed or added anything. Artist Marlies De Clerck was commissioned by Nein to copy the backs of the twelve works in her detailed oil painting technique. Is she the owner of the paintings created like this, and therefore also of the copied backs? Or is it the commissioner, Nein, or the museum? ’Twelve in a dozen’ offers a look behind the scenes and confronts us with various questions about curatorial practices, ownership and authenticity.
Arts platform Nein develops experimental production and presentation formats for performance, the visual arts and music. Interdisciplinary, solidary and unconventional, Nein enters into dialogue and offers a fresh breeding ground for creators and their public.
