Valéry Proust Museum/ White Cube Fever

The exhibition in the Valéry Proust Museum is no regular group or thematic exhibition, but creates an environment composed of works of different artists. The exhibition is based on the idea of the inevitable disappearance of the art into the emptiness of museums.

Curator Camiel Van Winkel starts from two basic works to reinforce his idea: on the one hand the work of poet Marcel Proust (1871-1922), A l'ombre des jeunes filles et fleurs (from the fifteen-part compilation A la recherche du temps perdu) and on the other hand, the essay by philosopher-poet Paul Valéry (1871-1945) Le problème des musées.

A tangible gap opens up between the artist who withdraws from his work, and the viewer who believes that the work was intended for another. The Valéry Proust Museum exploits the emotional potential of this gap. With work by Josef Albers, Robert Barry, Lynda Benglis, Frits Van den Berghe, Cosima von Bonin, Dirk Braeckman, Gerhard von Graevenitz, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Arnoud Holleman, Craigie Horsfield, Ekaterina Kaplunova, Hélène Keil, Raoul De Keyser, Alvin Lucier, Pol Mara, Willem Oorebeek, L.A. Raeven, Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij, Berend Strik, Paul Thek.

Valéry Proust Museum is ther result of a collaboration between het  lectoraat beeldende kunst van AVS/St Joost (Avans Hogeschool), den Bosch en Breda), Marres, centrum voor hedendaagse cultuur in Maastricht and Mu.ZEE in Ostend.
The Valéry Proust Museum, an intriguing story!
