The Mu.ZEE collec tion in dialogue with historic art magazines

This collection presentation has been constructed around a number of tone-setting magazines: L’Art Moderne – Revue critique des Arts et de la Littérature, Le Centaure, Apollo, Vijfde Wiel and +- 0 (=Plus moins zéro). All were linked to an art gallery of the same name with the exception of L’Art Moderne, which was linked to the Les XX artists’ movement.
It provided artists with a platform: they could stage exhibitions, and the magazines would discuss their work in detail. The magazines and galleries also played an important role in the development of Belgian art history at the end of the 19th century and during the 20th century. This story is now being visualised: five magazines and four clusters of artists and artworks from the period 1890 – 1970. Artists being exhibited include Guillaume Vogels, Périclès Pantazis, Fernand Khnopff, James Ensor, Willy Finch, Paul Delvaux, Armand Vanderlick, Henri Wolvens, Floris Jespers, Edgard Tytgat, Constant Permeke, Léon de Smet, Jean Milo, Victor Servranckx, Louis van Lint, Jean Brusselmans, Walter Leblanc, Albert Rubens and Pierre Alechinsky…
